This week, May 14 – 21, is mental health awareness week across Northern Ireland. The Public Health Agency (PHA) is focusing the week on stress and the methods to cope with life’s daily challenges. Stress is a normal biological response to difficult events in our lives such as pressures of family life or work, financial issues, health problems, etc. Without methods to cope with stress, it can have serious consequences on our health.
The Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) has published a report assessing the state of development and implementation of policy, strategies and information systems to meet the needs of people living with Type 2 diabetes, or those at risk of developing the condition. Around 88,000 people in Northern Ireland are living with diabetes (90% Type 2 diabetes); an increase of 71% between 2004/05 and 2015/16.
A new pilot programme - a ‘Substance Misuse Court’ - challenges offenders to tackle their drug and alcohol misuse. The new Substance Misuse Court pilot will allow the Judge to refer offenders, who have been convicted of an offence related to their alcohol or drugs misuse, to an intensive treatment-focused behavioural change programme before sentencing.
The Soft Drinks Industry Levy in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK has commenced today, April 06 2018 – the same tax commencing May 01 in the Republic of Ireland (known as the Sugar-Sweetened Drink Tax). The tax will apply to sugar sweetened drinks with sugar content of 5 grams per 100ml at a rate of 18p per litre. A second rate will apply for drinks with a sugar content of 8 grams or above at 24p per litre.
The first bulletin of the Northern Ireland Substance Misuse Database (SMD) provides a summary of data on people presenting to services with problem drug and/or alcohol misuse for the period 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017. During this time 4,368 clients presented to services for problem substance misuse and gave consent for their details to be included in the SMD. Some of the key findings are presented below:
IPH supports UK National No Smoking Day 2018. The Public Health Agency is running a 'Proud to be a Quitter' campaign and has teamed up with voluntary sector organisations, pharmacists, community and HSC Trust stop smoking service providers, and the local No Smoking Day Coordinating Committee to urge smokers to quit on 14 March by seeking the help of their local stop smoking service.
