Data from the most recent wave of the Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative has been released. The report, launched yesterday by Minister of State for Health Promotion Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy was presented at the Association for the Study of Obesity on the island of Ireland annual conference. The report provides data on primary school children collected in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2015. The latest results show that levels of excess weight in children are stabilizing, but they also indicate that:
- at least one in five children are overweight or obese;
- more girls than boys are overweight or obese across all ages
- those attending DEIS schools tend to have higher levels of overweight and obesity and the gap becomes wider as children get older.
