The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) has today welcomed the publication of the new draft measures to tackle binge drinking & public disorder.
In its submission the Institute had called for tighter regulation of the availability of alcohol, a limit on the number of special exemptions and stricter enforcement of penalties for those who sell alcohol to those under 18.
IPH Chief Executive, Dr. Jane Wilde, said the draft legislation provides a welcome step in the right direction in terms of addressing the serious alcohol problem in Ireland.
However, she said that Institute would be studying the legislation in detail over the coming days to provide a considered response particularly with regard to its call for minimum pricing of alcohol, the limiting of the annual number of special exemptions to each licence holder and a traceability mechanism to identify the sales source of bottled alcohol.
