New leadership at all-island public health body
The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) today announced the appointment of Suzanne Costello as Chief Executive Officer.
Ms Costello today joins IPH from Alcohol Action Ireland, the national charity for alcohol-related issues, where she has served as the organisation’s CEO since 2013. Suzanne has also served as the Interim Policy Lead for the HSE’s Alcohol Programme since 2015, and previously served as Samaritans Ireland’s Executive Director.
IPH’s Board of Directors – which consists of representatives from the Departments of Health (DOH) in Ireland and Northern Ireland, and the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland – announced the appointment.
“I am delighted to welcome the appointment of Suzanne Costello as the new CEO of IPH,” said Kate O'Flaherty of the DOH (ROI).
“Suzanne’s expertise will help to drive the institute’s work on improving health and wellbeing, and reducing health inequalities on the island of Ireland, and supporting the efforts of the Departments of Health North and South in this important agenda.”
Liz Redmond of the DOH (NI) added: “Throughout her career Suzanne has been committed to improving public health and wellbeing. She has the expertise and extensive leadership experience necessary to lead the important work which the institute will undertake in the coming years. We look forward to welcoming Suzanne into her new role and supporting the IPH team.”
Commenting on her appointment, Suzanne said: “I am very pleased to join the IPH team and to be given the opportunity to contribute to its work to reduce health inequalities and build healthier communities across the island of Ireland. “
Established in 1998 with offices in Belfast and Dublin, IPH is the recognised voice for public health evidence on the island of Ireland. IPH works with partners to provide evidence-based public health intelligence to help shape effective public health policies and interventions.
Suzanne Costello Bio
Suzanne joins the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) from Alcohol Action Ireland, where she served as the organisation’s CEO since 2013. From 2015, Suzanne also acted as the Interim Policy Programme Lead for the HSE’s Alcohol Programme. Prior to joining Alcohol Action Ireland, Suzanne was Samaritans Executive Director for Ireland for six years. Suzanne has a primary degree in Social Science from University College Dublin, an MBS from the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business and is a Fellow of the RSA.
