The strategy - Breastfeeding - A Great Start: A Strategy for Northern Ireland (2013-23) – aims to improve the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies in Northern Ireland through breastfeeding. The latest review outlines progress made through the Breastfeeding Strategy’s Action Plan. The next steps outlined in the review will make an important contribution towards helping to improve breastfeeding rates in Northern Ireland and reduce health inequalities.
IPH continues to support the development of breastfeeding strategies across the island of Ireland. In 2017, IPH published the report ‘Breastfeeding on the island of Ireland which highlighted trends in breastfeeding rates and strategic approaches to improving breastfeeding rates and experiences across the island of Ireland. Findings from the report were showcased at the 2017 Faculty of Public Health Medicine Winter Scientific Meeting and the ‘Advancing Breastfeeding Research and Practice’ conference organised by Northern Ireland Breastfeeding Strategy Research Workstrand in partnership with the Doctoral Midwifery Research Society and Northern Ireland Public Health Research Network. IPH is also a member of the Northern Ireland Breastfeeding Strategy Research Workstrand.
In the Republic of Ireland, IPH completed a review of the implementation of breastfeeding policy in the Republic of Ireland which informed the direction of Breastfeeding in a Healthy Ireland - Health Service Breastfeeding Action Plan 2016 – 2021.
