Invitation to discover the key findings of the groundbreaking Lipgene Project

28 Nov 2008

What? - Lipgene – a ground breaking project to tackle the burden of the metabolic Syndrome

When? - Friday 5th December 2008

Where? - University College Dublin, Ireland

Why? - Each year, Europeans are getting fatter and they are increasing their chances of suffering from other chronic diseases later in life. People who are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer from coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure and this clustering of risk factors is referred to as the metabolic syndrome. Unless effective public health strategies are enforced, it is expected that the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome will continue to increase, bringing with it a dramatic rise in health and social welfare costs needed to treat the condition.

Lipgene is a five year EU-funded project looking at new approaches to tackle the burden of the metabolic syndrome. Lipgene set out to examine and understand the metabolic syndrome, and to provide a multidisciplinary approach to its effective management and prevention.

On the 5th December 2008, Lipgene scientists will reveal their latest results at a free to attend conference in Ireland, and we invite you to come and join us.

Come and discover…

  • how common genetic variations interact with our diet and predispose aspects of the metabolic syndrome.

  • how the efforts by Lipgene to use novel animal husbandry and genetic engineering technology could modify the fat content of the diet.

  • what European consumers really think about genetic screening of people’s diets (personalised nutrition) and the use of genetically modified foods.

  • how novel approaches to modify the fat content of foods can impact on cardiovascular healthand the economic implications of such innovations in Europe.
