The findings of Health Impacts of Education: a review will be presented at a lunchtime event on Tuesday 4 November 2008.

The review illustrates how education impacts on health through increasing opportunities for income, employment and personal and social development.  Groups who may be particularly vulnerable to poorer health as a result of their experiences within the education system are highlighted. Particular reference is made to the education systems in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

After much consideration, we have decided not to hold the All-Ireland Health Intelligence conference, “Better Intelligence. Better Decisions. Better Health.” on 19-20 January 2009 in Dublin. This decision was made in context of the financial constraints imposed by the current economic climate. IPH appreciates the support of our partners and the interest shown by the health intelligence community. It is our intention to reinstate this conference at a more appropriate time.

This one-day seminar highlights the importance and relevance of the interconnections between environment, biodiversity and health to out quality of life, sense of place, well being, economic development and sustainability. It will provide examples of these interconnections and outline the potential benefits of integrating environment, biodiversity and health strategies at local, regional and national levels.

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) launched two datasets that can be easily used to make more comprehensive comparisons between different areas of the island. The two datasets are called The All-Ireland Health and Social Care Indicator Set and Irish Health Poverty Index.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness today attended the launch of the Centre of Excellence for Public Health Research in Northern Ireland.   In his speech he congratulated IPH on recently marking 10 years of working and referred to their successful work in developing partnerships for health across the island.

The Centre, in which IPH partner Queen's University and a number of other organisations including the Community for Development and Health Network , will research complex public health issues such as obesity, smoking and health inequalities.

The 24th All Ireland Social Medicine Meeting will take place from Friday 20 March to Sunday 22 March 2009.

Papers are now invited for oral presentation or posters under the broad themes of health improvement, health services research, health protection and health intelligence.
