The seventh in the series of APHO Technical Briefings is called "Measuring smoking prevalence in local populations”.
Local smoking data at a population level is necessary for planning, targeting and evaluating local services and initiatives aimed at improving health and reducing health inequalities through lifestyle change.
New report on undiagnosed diabetes in Scotland

Scotland's Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO) has released a report on undiagnosed cases of diabetes across Scotland. The report uses the PBS model that INIsPHO has adapted for use on the island of Ireland and data from the Scottish Diabetes Survey 2008.

Four PhD studentships in UKCRC Centre for Translational Research in Public Health

Three Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) PhD studentships are available to start this autumn in the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, a UKCRC public health research centre of excellence.
The studentships are funded by ESRC under the jointly funded e-health infrastructure initiative, which is led by the NIHR capacity building programme, and aims to build capacity for future research using personalised electronic health records.

The third in the series of APHO Technical Briefings describes the calculation of common types of statistics used within public health intelligence, specifically: rates, proportions, means and age-standardised rates and ratios. We also describe the use of confidence intervals i.e. what they are and when they are used, and present the APHO preferred methods for calculating the intervals for the type of statistics described.
