National health information can hide important differences in health at local level. There is currently no system for monitoring local health and social wellbeing across the island of Ireland. To support development of an agreed suite of indicators, INIsPHO has created an all-Ireland dataset entitled the All-Ireland Health and Wellbeing Dataset (AIHWDS). This resource will enable users will now be able to compare a wide range of indicators that will allow them to obtain a more comprehensive profile of a particular area.

Health inequalities are unacceptable, starting early in life and persisting not only into old age but subsequent generations. They reflect a complex array of health, social economic, environmental, and resourcing factors. Local health inequalities indicators give a picture of the situation in an area and put it into context by supporting and facilitating geographical comparisons.
